What is light? How is it affected by the time of day and location? How do light and the absence of light enhance our perception of ordinary things? Those are some of the questions that I have been asking myself to guide my investigation using film and digital photography. I started out thinking of the theme of light but it evolved into much more than that. I was so drawn to light, natural light in particular, that I started to explore what about it captivated me. My three selected works, “Chicago,” “Perspective,” and “Mirror” have been influential in my thought process. With those three pieces, I started to discover what light is and how it enhances my perception of ordinary things. By shooting at different times of day and observing where the sun hits certain objects, I have witnessed how certain shots differ on film versus digital cameras. Light helps evoke an emotion that is individualized to the viewer. Combining old technologies, such as film, with news ones like Adobe Photoshop, I experiment with contrast, highlights, and shadows. With my images I want my work to evoke an intense emotion in the viewer-- a feeling similar to what I get when taking these images.
